This course focuses on theory and practice of (queer) crip theory and disability studies. What kinds of agency and transformative perspectives emerge from the new discourses of critiquing normativity and ableism? We will explore issues of accessibility and participation of the production of art and culture, as well as the deconstruction of violent norms. Drawing on key texts and artistic projects, this course introduces basic terms and concepts from Critical Disability Studies and Crip Theory, inviting students to understand inclusion as a transformative and emancipatory force and to rethink our systems and relationships based on principles of participation. Accessibility: Reading the text excerpts is recommended but not a mandatory requirement for participating in the session and discussion, as we will read and contextualize the excerpts together. Texts are available in both English and German and at various levels of difficulty. If you need screen reader versions or accessible PDFs, please let me know when you enroll. A semester plan will be shared at the beginning of the course. We will plan enough breaks together for each session. Some of the sessions will be audio-recorded and will subsequently be available on Moodle for you to listen to in case you have to miss a session due to illness. If you have any other questions or concerns regarding accessibility, or if you are unsure whether you can participate in the course, or if there is anything I can do to make it easier for you to participate, please let me know. Exhibition visits and a lecture This course is offered in collaboration with Bernd Oppl’s course “Everybody.” It is recommended that students register for both courses. The sessions take place alternately on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and are intersecting. As part of the course, there will be a workshop on the concept of interdependence and “Access Intimacy,” as well as an artist talk by Jjjjjerome Ellis. Together with the other course group, we will visit the exhibition “Blut und Kaffee” at the Exhibit Gallery as well as the solo exhibition “A calendar commemorating slaves who escaped their enslavers, 1673–1886” by Jjjjjerome Ellis at the Secession.
