Every daily object that arrives at the ‘Ambulance’ in a broken state is a patient with a medical history, symptoms, vital signs and a prognosis. The students form the treatment team. In the ‘Ambulance for Objects’ course, strategies are developed to extend the lifespan of objects across various product categories through ‘first aid’, ‘second aid’ and the right ‘aftercare’. One of the aims of the circular economy is to keep objects in use for as long as possible. Design for reparability is a prerequisite for this, but it is still far from being – or has long since ceased to be – the standard in industrial production. The focus is on the design of repair as a cultural practice, which requires specific knowledge, craftsmanship and tools.
